I got my septum pierced on Friday.

Can I just say that I love Qui Qui at Kaliedescope? He's an excellent piercer and has a really excellent personality and demeanor for his occupation. The actual piercing wasn't very painful, but the site has been a little achy and sensitive since the piercing. If the barbell gets bumped or jostled, I can definitely feel it for a few minutes. I didn't have any sort of cold before I got it done, but now I seem to have the perma-sniffles, which makes everything in my nose like a burning ring of fire. Snot + nose piercings = a bad idea. Not that the combination can be helped because, obviously, it's the nose's function to produce snot and such, but still.

I lost a ball off the barbell last night at the movies, so I had to go in today and get it replaced. I have to go back tomorrow because I chose a barbell that is too small and I can't flip it up like I'm supposed to be able to. Since I've already been back once and I hate bothering people, I'm dreading it. Hopefully, he'll be able to hook me up with the next size bigger and send me on my way.

photographic evidence (excuse the fact that I'm not looking right at the camera; I look semi-retarded when I do):

It should also be said that moving is a giant, giant pain in the ass.

The end.

In Minneapolis, with an antenna you somehow get about six religious channels, the home shopping network, and four other channels (NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC). Usually the religious channels are pretty entertaining. For example:

Tonight I watched a snippet about the "healing powers" of charcoal, hosted by a bunch of pseudo-doctors and "lifestyle counselors" that work at the Uchee Pines Institute. None of the presenters appeared comfortable in front of the camera and the set decor was reminiscent of a Country Kitchen restaurant about 10-15 years ago, if those existed then. Most of their "evidence" was presented in the form of anecdotes, none of which were particularly convincing.

Plus, the information and pictures provided on their website remind me of the place Julianne Moore goes at the end of Safe.
If you're not busy and you live in the Twin Cities Area, come see this movie tonight:

Righteous Babes, Directed by Pratibha Parmar
TONIGHT, 7:00 PM
Room 202, Coffman (student union) on the U of M Campus
Free!
Parking available in the east river road garage right behind the student center.

"In this accomplished documentary, acclaimed filmmaker Pratibha Parmar (A Place of Rage, Warrior Marks) explores the intersection of feminism with popular music, focusing on the role of female recording artists in the 1990s and their influence on modern women. Parmar argues that, far from being dead, feminism has thrived and expanded its reach through the direct, aggressive, and revolutionary medium of rock music, and through the role models of performers like Madonna and Ani DiFranco. Intercuting performance footage with interviews, Parmar explores her thesis with some of the most outspoken female musicians, feminist theorists, and journalists of the UK and US, including Sinead O’Connor, Skin (Skunk Anansie), Chrissie Hynde (The Pretenders), Tori Amos, Ani DiFranco, Camille Paglia, and Gloria Steinem. The Righteous Babes offers a searing and timely critique of the commercialization of feminism through 'Girl Power' Spice Girls style, ditzy Ally McBeal and her trans-Atlantic counterpart, Bridget Jones. With critical insight and candidness, this powerful and timely documentary demonstrates the vibrancy and relevance of feminism to women and young girls today. Essential viewing for feminists, post-feminists and anti-feminists alike."
from Women Make Movies.

I just got some information on what sounds like my dream program for a master's degree.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MA in Gender Studies
School of Oriental & African Studies (SOAS), University of London, UK
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The MA in Gender Studies at SOAS is a unique programme, its
principal aim being to re-focus issues of Western gender studies on
the complex specificities of Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
Drawing on the expertise of staff across two SOAS faculties, it
offers the specialised study of gender in relation to the cultures
of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, together with rigorous training
in, and questioning of, contemporary gender theory. In terms of
gender theory, it offers a solid foundation with sufficient breadth
and depth to facilitate a range of specialist pathways. In terms of
specialisation, it draws on the expertise of internationally
recognised scholars of Asian, African, and Middle EasternStudies at
SOAS.
The programme is structured in the same way as most SOAS MA degrees:
students take three taught courses and complete a dissertation. All
students take the compulsory course Gender Theory and the Study of
Asia and Africa. Further options include a wide range of gender and
gender-related courses from a comprehensive list offered by the
Faculties of Languages and Cultures and Arts and Humanities (see
below). Students will write a 10,000 word dissertation based on
either the compulsory course or one of the component courses. They
will have access to a wealth of study resources available in the
SOAS Library and in nearby institutions such as the British Library,
University College London Library and Senate House Library.
Prospective students should contact the Programme Convenor (Sian
Hawthorne: sh79@soas.ac.uk; +44 (0)20 7898 4774) at an early stage
of their application in order to seek advice on the most appropriate
options for study.
Structure of the MA in Gender Studies
---------------------------------------
The MA in Gender Studies takes the standard form of MA programmes at
SOAS, comprising four elements (three taught courses plus a
dissertation). The programme may be taken over one year full-time,
or two or three years part-time.
Course Options
----------------
All students take FOUR elements, as follows:
1. Gender Theory and the Study of Asia and Africa (Compulsory course)
The aim of this course will be to offer a historical and critical
survey of contemporary gender theory in order to explore the
challenge of gender studies for interdisciplinary and cross-cultural
research.
